On my second go around with the hometown heroes over at FlyDotU, where dreams come true (and interviews come through, haha), the group and I discussed where they are as of late and what's next for them. With the promotion of their debut project The Greater Than Club coming to an end, the trio is looking toward their sequel to the Columbus classic when TGTC 2 hits the shelves in what they tell me as the, "early part of 2012."
Similarly, the group hasn't just been sitting on their late spring release of TGTC, producers Iye and Jay Swif (Mnkeywrentch) released a heavily slept on producing drop called Until Forever, which I also speak to the duo about. Along with the Mnkeywrentch debut, I asked Iye about exclusively producing up-and-coming Columbus emcee P. Blackk's Blackk Friday, which has gained a lot of street buzz through out the midwest.
Fly Union as a whole has also been seen working in studio with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and Casey Veggies and one can only imagine the possibilities of tracks featuring a collaboration with any of them.
Finally, I asked Fly Union about the LeBron James/TGTC hat situation and the group felt that it was a good look for them as LeBron, in the past, has been an avid supporter of the C-O trio (even if he hasn't been a supporter of other things Ohio).
The full video interview can be seen below:
On TGTC 2 and being in studio with Kendrick Lamar and Casey Veggies: (Iye said) The project is in the works. It's a process that's organic, we're not trying to force it. We had the honor to be in the studio with, like you mentioned, Casey Veggies, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and a couple other cats so right now we're just building, trying to make the music and we're going to try to let it put itself together. So it's just work, it's a work in progress you know?
On the release date of TGTC 2: (Iye said) We're shooting for early part of 2012 but we don't have a date or anything like that but promos start first part of the year and we'll just kind of go from there.
On the Mnkeywrench "Until Forever" project: (Swif said) Until Forever project just kind of came out of nowhere. Me and Iye already had a couple songs together that we had produced but as people know Fly Union, Iye and me are just going back-and-forth with beats so, we've actually started producing some new stuff so we'll see how it goes, so yeah.
On Iye's production of P. Blackk's "Blackk Friday": (Iye said) Yeah shouts to P. Blackk you know what I mean it was a great experience. We spent a little over a year working on that project and it was definitely a good builder for me. It was a different vibe than what we usually do, took me out of my pocket and gave me a chance to shine how I do so no pressure we just got in there and got it done and like I said shouts to P. Blackk, a very talented young man and a pleasure to work with.
On possible collaborations: (Iye said) I'm a fan of good music. Like I said we try to be organic but there are a lot of artists that I would say I'm a personal fan of if we get a chance to work. I just hate name dropping cause it's kind of cliché. (Jerreau added) Right and I mean there are sometimes where you might get in the studio and you know nothing comes of it (laughs) you know so like he said, being organic and there are even some artists locally that we've been working with so we'll be dropping more projects, Fly Union/TGTC related projects in the future.
On LeBron/Hat situation: (Jerreau said) Actually I was knocked out. I was taking a nap and I woke up and when I wake up, I turned to ESPN, CNN and I be like, "Oh shit" (laughs) and it's all over the internet and everybody started texting/calling so yeah I woke up and said, "that was a hell of a look." So it was definitely something that is dope cause people like what we're doing so that was definitely a gesture to show us to keep doing what you're doing.
On possibility of signing with a major label: (Jerreau said) Yeah, uh if it makes sense. I don't think we're opposed to it but there's nothing like having larger percentages but it's a lot of leg work when you're independent. I think it's something that, it's great but it's some working involved. I think we're definitely learning that first hand that it's not all glitter and gold.
