Columbus Kings: Episode 3 - Copywrite

Peter Nelson (also known as Copywrite) has a long lineage in Columbus Hip Hop's history. From the early day's at Bernie's to MegaHertz' latest and first official album, Nelson began his musical journey as the quintessential High Street kid and learned from the godfathers of Columbus' urban culture heads.
An original and founding member of the notorious MHz crew, Copywrite has been around and has seen the urban culture of Ohio's capital city evolve. Forming an original group of numerous emcees, vocalists, deejays and producers during the mid-90s, Copy and MHz narrowed down their infamous clique to five official members by the new millennium. Early on, the group caught the attention of Hot 97's Bobbito Garcia and even the well-known R&B group Boyz II Men.
Copywrite released his debut album, T.H.E. High Exhaulted in 2002, an effort combined with pervious years of success (particularly with "Holier Than Thou" in 2000 and MHz' "World Premier" single in 1998) had Copy and his crew receiving critical acclaim nationally.
A heavily influential member of the underground Hip Hop collective the Weathermen, Copywrite's versatility as a rapper spread beyond the realms of his solo and crew work. The group showcased some of Hip Hop music's top crop in the independent scene during the late 90s and early 2000s.
2010 saw the release of Copy's second LP release, The Life and Times of Peter Nelson, a follow up of 2009's Ultrasound: The Rebirth EP. The two projects re-established Nelson's acclaim as a thoroughbred spitter and one of the best in the Midwest.
Copy recently released his latest solo album, God Save the King in February 2012. The album heavily marked Nelson's shift from hard, dark and raunchy lyrics to those of reflection and greater whit. 2012 also saw the release of MHz' official debut album, MHz Legacy, and the first group release since the passing of member Camu Tao. The project was very well received in the Hip Hop world and further carried on the legacy of the legendary Columbus clique.
Listen: Comp-B- "What Are You Waiting For" feat. Wes Hunter
After a great year of producing
numerous projects, Athens, Ohio producer/DJ Comp-B has been pretty
low-key as of late. That doesn't mean he hasn't been working he's
been posting beats on his SoundCloud and doing remixes. Yesterday we
were given a joint that he's done with fellow Grey Market member WesHunter. Comp-B has changed up his sound just a tad to add a but of an
electronic edge to his music, but he still keeps the sample-driven
soundscapes. Wes Hunter speaks on his frustrations with hip-hop while
Comp-B opens and closes the joint with his sound. You can stream and
download the joint for FREE below. Comp is working on his debut
album, keep it locked for updates on that and all of Grey MarketMusic.

Listen: The Battery- "Glass"
The Battery is the California duo of
Peace 586 and Jurny Big calling these two seasoned veterans would be
a disrespect to everything they've done. Both are part of the Tunnel
Rat crew but it wasn't until these last couple of years that the two
started working with each other as a duo. They released “One”
back in 2011 and “Two” is supposed to be released next month.
Below you can stream the track “Glass” and below that you can
take a look at the tracklisting which features a good amount of
Tunnel Rat family on the track.

2. I’m Good
3. Cuddit (feat. Sev Statik and RationaL)
4. Glass
5. Finna Be (feat. Propaganda)
6. Cole Haan (feat. Shames Worthy)

Listen: Joey Bada$$- "95 til Infinity" (prod. by Lee Bannon)
Joey Bada$$ broke my heart this week by
pushing back his long awaited tape, album whatever you want to call
it “Summer Knights”. He waited til the last minute to tell which
was salt to the wound. The tape was pushed back to July 1st
and we were also told Capital STEEZ's posthumous album “King
Capital” is slated for a July 7th release. Along with
both of those announcements Mr. Bada$$ released a heater of a track
called “95 to Infinity” produced by Lee Bannon and it's filled
with grittiness of both the beat and the rhymes from the Pro Era
emcee. Keep it locked here for more updates on “Summer Knights”.

Watch: 61ack4eart- "Ring Ring"
61ack4eart is a Columbus emcee that
happens to be a part of my group The Underestimated. However a couple
weeks ago he released a music video for a very powerful song called
“Ring Ring”. Over a soundscape provided by Comp-B 61ack4eart gets
personal and talks about his broken relationship with his dad.
Definitely something a lot of people who have dealt with divorces and
split parents can relate to. You can peep the video below and “Ring
Ring” should be available for download soon.

Listen: Shad & Skratch Bastid- "The Spring-Up"
A while back I gave you guys a rough
mix of the track “Peace” by Shad. What we didn't know back then
was that “Peace” was a demo to “The Spring-Up” an EP by Shad
and Skratch Bastid. Bastid on the beats and Shad on the rhymes. I
haven't gotten a chance to really sit down and listen to this seeing
as how it just came out under 12 hours ago. But if Shad's discography
is any proof “The Spring-Up” is guaranteed to showcase Shad's
muti-layered rhymes filled with metaphors, similes life lessons and
more. Consider this a sample of Shad because his new LP “Flying
Colours” comes out later this year too.
